FAQs about Student Loan Forgiveness

From now until October 31, 2022, public service employees of qualifying organizations are eligible to apply for the Limited PSLF Waiver, and may be able to have student loan debts forgiven. In order to qualify, employees must have a Direct Loan(s), and be working for a government or nonprofit agency for at least ten years while making payments on your loans.

What if I am a public service or nonprofit employee who has paid on my student loans for less than 10 years?

If you think your employment may qualify, you are encouraged to apply, even if you have not made 120 student loan payments or been employed with a qualifying agency for ten years.  You may be able to receive the forgiveness once you reach the repayment threshold, but only if you apply before October 31, 2022.

How do I know if my employer is a qualifying employer?

Generally speaking, nonprofit organizations, federal, state, tribal, and local government entities, and education institutions are all qualifying employers.  The US Department of Education has created a nifty tool to support workers inquiring about whether they qualify for forgiveness. Check your employer’s eligibility by using the PSLF Help Tool  here.

Is this the same as President Biden’s announcement on one-time student loan debt relief?

No.  The PSLF program is in addition to President Biden’s August 24th announcement for student loan debt relief of up to $20,000 for lower income borrowers.  PSLF is not an income-based program – instead, it provides relief to those borrowers, regardless of current or former income status, who work or have worked in a public service role.

Where can I find more information about the PSLF program?

Find more information or apply by October 31 here.
